078 – Michael Lovitch – Throw Your Own Party

Michael Lovitch

Michael Lovitch is a co-founder of the Baby Bathwater Institute, a private membership community for highly successful entrepreneurs and founders.

The first question most people ask is, “What the heck is Baby Bathwater?” and while the name might sound a bit funny, it’s one of the most prestigious communities in the entrepreneurial space due to the methodical curation from Michael and his team.

In this week’s episode, Michael and Elliot dive deep into the power of community building and why you should start building yours immediately if you’re not already doing so.

3 Key Points

  1. Building a network starts with what you have to offer:  Most people get network building all wrong. They start to think about what they want and try to meet people from whom they can extract that object. The real power of a network comes from the value that each member brings, and if you want to be a member of a strong network, you must first bring value.
  2. If you want to impress successful people, don’t show off: When you’re surrounded by other successful people, one of the worst things you can do is to show off and try to impress. Be a good listener, ask interesting questions, and really care about learning about others. People remember how you make them feel, and being a show-off produces some of the worst feelings possible.
  3. If you don’t already have a community, learn to throw your own party: If the community that you want to be a part of doesn’t exist, or you don’t currently have access to it, throw your own party. And we mean this very literally. People will very rarely say no to free food and drinks, so throwing dinners or parties is a great way to start to build a community where one doesn’t already exist.
